Comment: I have heard, and now looked up at Wikipedia, that "E-mail" is a
shortening of Eudora mail (named by Steve Dorner, a programmer who wrote
Eudora, a program to send mail over the internet). He named the program
Eudora after Eudora Welty. Is this true?

No, Email is a shortening of "Electronic mail and the idea if not the term was around before the actual internet as early as the late 80's early 70's. Wiki seems to agree with the notion that Eudora Wetly inspired the email client name, but Eudora mail was developed in 1990 - the term "email" according to this site, dates it to 1982. Finally, Eudora was hardly the earliest email application, but it was popular probably due to the fact the the client was available in a free version.

Do people still use Eudora? That was the first email program I used many years ago. Moved on to Outlook Express, Outlook, and now Thunderbird, which I'd highly recommend.

I'm glad you found Thunderbird, it's a great program. But, you moved on from Eudora to Outlook Express? Ouch! That sounds like a definite step backwards to me! I used Eudora from about 1994 all the way up to Thunderbird, and now I use only Gmail and my iPhone (and Outlook at work as I have no choice in the matter).

I went from thunderbird to outlook when I got an Exchange server at home... i used Netscape communicator from like 97 up. prior to 97, I used Eudora for like a few months didn't like it, then just used the Unix client Pine as that was what was available on the university servers. I switched to netscape messenger when Cable internet arrived in my town, and I haven't looked back. yes I'm using Outlook but that's more because it integrates with my exchange server flawlessly, and nothing else really does that. and to be honest, Outlook's not that bad when you know how it all works.

Oh, wow...pine. That's one of those forgotten memories...

I used Eudora for quite a few years, even had a paid version for a while, but after they stopped supporting it, eventually gave up. Now I do everything online with gmail anyhow.
