Comment: Look at the picture. It is of the destruction in Haiti after the
recent earthquake. Funny how the only thing left standing – and almost utterly untouched by any damage – is the statue of the crucifix. Amazing. Comment: I have seen this photo circulating Facebook. This stone crucifix is still standing after the Haitian earthquake because Jesus wants us to know that he is always there. It's a miracle. Yup, 100k+- men, women and children dead or buried alive in rubble and this statue makes still standing makes it all good. After I had commented about this photo on a friends page stating that Jesus should have put his efforts into saving the people who were screaming and calling out his name, rather than saving a stone idol statue of himself, I received an response that went something like this. "Jesus wants to show us that he is always there and the real miracle is that he is no longer on the cross, he is risen..." In other words, DON'T look at death and suffering of these people, but rather, look over hear at the pretty birdies and puppies. Aren't they cute and cuddly and don't they make you feel good inside?

Even if it is true ... so what? There are probably much more secular scenes of this sort throughout Haiti, where things remain standing even though the buildings around them have collapsed.
This really irritates me. Is God so petty that in His quest to judge a nation, He'll make sure that His symbols aren't affected? That makes God look like a Six-year-old. |

Sure, but anything secular is meaningless and unimportant and makes baby Jebus cry, so those images aren't worth anything.

So the crucifix was okay, but the church was destroyed?

Not too amazing, since 50% of buildings in Haiti weren't damaged or destroyed (said the AP on Friday, anyway).

Don't invading/ conquoring forces generally plant thier "flag" or mark at the scene of thier battles to mark thier territory?
So like.. is god saying "I DID THIS" with these and we just interpert it as a sign of love/strength? |

Somehow, I just knew something like this would turn up.
BTW, has Phelps gotten around to making his God Hates Haiti site yet? |

No, but Pat Robertson had some particularly awful things to say.

To me it looks to be painted wood. If you look closely you can see to vertical lines were the to pieces were notched and joined. Also who would paints stone. Lets not forget that small wood things do a lot better job of surviving earthquakes than large unenforced brick buildings. |

I wanna see a natural disaster where all the religious symbolism is destroyed and all that's left is the porno theater.

I realize you are being facetious, but one reason you probably won't see this is because many religious buildings (notably, those from the major religions) are built to impress the heathen locals, so are built strong - the profits are in the long-term; porno theaters tend to be quick-and-dirty (no pun intended) buildings - the profits are in the short term.

By the way: Wasn't the fact that a mosque survived the Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004 interpreted by some as proof that it was a buildings of the devil - because the devil sent the tsunami, but wouldn't destroy his own house?
How does that fit with the surviving cruxifix being a sign of Jesus? Shouldn't it be seen as a) proof that the cruxifix is of the devil (see above), or b) proof that Jesus sent the earthquake, but wouldn't destroy his own likeness (but apparently his father's house behind it)? You know what I wanna see? I wanna see a natural disaster take out Phelp's church (I'll be charitable and hope it doesn't happen while anyone's in it) and see him make a "God Hates Me" site.
