Because the paintings will look the ones the Huxtables had on their walls. Lots of bright colors, people dancing, etc.

Also, how does astronaut wife lady know that it was Michelle Obama who moved the portraits? Does she get invited to the White House during every aministration?
Of course she does. She's the wife of an astronaut who walked on the moon!

Nitpick: the astronaut's wife is not a hairdresser. The astronaut's wife told the story to her hairdresser.

But yeah. It's a pretty small pool of people from which to choose.
I stand corrected. I did think it odd that an Apollo astronaut's wife would be working as a hairdresser, especially since she'd probably be in her 70s now.

Also perhaps less use of Crayola(tm) Flesh colored crayons.

other astronauts and wives recently visited the White House to mark the
40th anniversary of our landing and walk on the moon. This lady has been
to the White House on several occasions.

We actually know the name of the lady/wife, but she asked for her name not
to be repeated.
I thought I'd see if I could figure out who the "lady" might be. I've managed to narrow it down to about 2-4 possibilities. She's supposedly the wife of one of the 12 men who walked on the moon, she lives in the Houston area, and has been at the White House "several occasions" and is in her 70's.

Neil Armstrong: He and his first wife were divorced in 1994; He and his second wife live in Ohio.
Buzz Aldrin: Also divorced; he and his current (third) wife Lois were married in 1988, and live in California.
Pete Conrad: I don’t know if widows of astronauts were included, but he was also divorced and his most recent marriage was in 1990, not long before his death.
*Alan Bean: He and wife Leslie live in Texas.
Alan Shepard: Both he and his wife are deceased.
Edgar Mitchell: Lives in Florida.
David Scott: Lives in California
James Irwin: Deceased; his widow lives in Colorado.
*John Young: He and second wife Suzy live in a Seabrook, Texas, a Houston suburb.
*Charlie Duke: He and wife Dotty (Dorothy) live in New Braunfels, Texas.
*Gene Cernan: Married his second wife Jan Nanna in 1987, they live in Houston.
Harrison Schmidt: Lives in New Mexico.

So my guess would be either Leslie Bean or Dotty Duke. Suzy Young and Jan Nanna Cernan are also possibilities, but as they are second wives are less likely (IMHO) to have been to the White House on "several occasions." Also, I don't have birth dates for the wives, but from her photo I don't think Mrs. Cernan is in her 70's.

However, news reports indicate only the three Apollo 11 astronauts (Armstrong, Aldrin, and Collins - no mention of wives) were at the recent White House event, although many of the other Apollo astronauts were in DC on the anniverary date, and participated in a NASA news briefing and events at the Smithsonian. They may indeed have met the President but were not considered news-worthy... And I didn't investigate Collins' marital status, but since he wasn't a "man who walked on the moon" his wife wouldn't fit the criteria anyway.

Anyway, if the report happened (not that it's true), my money is on Dotty Duke.

New Braunfels isn't really near Houston, although I guess that wouldn't preclude Ms. Duke from getting her hair done there.

This one wife was especially looking forward to one historical room where the portraits of the First Ladies hang. Upon entering the room, she was disappointed to see the room filled with only black art and all the First Ladies portraits were gone.

Exactly.

And I wrote my previous post without the "Black art" explanation, but it sounded incomplete to me. I guess I should have just added a quote.

It is remotely possible that if the woman in question is from the US South and in her 70s, she is old enough to have interacted with grandparents or great-grandparents who were alive before the US Civil War, and used as everyday language phrases like what Snopes posted sardonically above. I'm not excusing her-- she should be going to Unlearning Racism seminars, instead of gossiping with her hairdresser-- I'm just pointing out that she's not an aberration, but a fairly standard product of a fairly recent time.

My father, who was born in 1915 and raised in Kentucky, talked horribly about black people. Just awful. One of the few things I'm really grateful for about my Jehovah's Witness upbringing is that it provided a counter-balance to that (racism is a sin -- they don't buy that whole curse-of-Ham thing).

I dunno if it's just me, but "a wife of one our astronauts" makes it read like the astronaut in question had several wives, and that this is referring to just one of them. I guess having the occasional bigamous marriage ignored is just one of the perks of having walked on the moon.

"If anyone present knows of any reason why these two may not be lawfully we-"
"Quiet you fool! I've walked on the moon! On the moon! Your puny earthbound laws do not apply to me! On the moon I say! *hysterical and unhinged laughter * "

Yeah, because telling your hairdresser something is a sure way to get the gossip spread all over town.

Tsk, Tsk First Lady requires more than twenty attendants

A Facebook friend posted a more extreme version of the OP that consisted of the text of this Canada Free Press article, along with some additional commentary by an unknown person. (She claimed it was her "source," though I don't know whether the person who sent it to her also wrote the commentary. She deleted the note after I pointed out the problems with it, so I can't quote directly, but the "gotcha!" point the commentator tried to make was that "Hillary only had 3 [staffers] and Laura had 1." I don't know where he or she got THOSE numbers. Has anyone else come across a statement like that? Even the OP claims Laura had 12, and according to this White House staff list for 2007, there were probably more. (It's hard to tell who's working for whom.)

And does anyone else besides me think that Canada Free Press article is vaguely racist? Or am I reading too much into it?

Nothing vague about it. CFP's rants and raves would make Fox News blush.

Now the "portraits" e-mail has morphed:

Comment: Just got an interesting email from my sister in Texas. Don't know about
the veracity of the info and was not successful in finding anything
currently on your site regarding it. Hoping you can verify or dismiss.

It's as follows:

"The astronauts were invited to the White House for a tour to celebrate
the year they went on the moon.

Bud S. wife, (the astronaut that went to the moon with Neil Armstrong),
goes to the same hair saloon John goes to get his hair beautified. They
went to the White House, but noticed all of the president's portraits had
been removed off of the wall. It has been a tradition to have same artist
paint the president's portrait and he would have painted Obamas, except
Obama now has black history displayed on the walls. Bud S and wife left
and refused to go on the tour because they noticed the removal of the
president's portraits and were not happy about it."

Goodness, that artist would be getting on a bit in years.

How does one display "black history"?

Wouldn't they already be on the tour if they were able to notice the removal of the presidents' portraits?

Wait a sec... Bud S? Who is that referring to? I never have seen or heard of any of the astronauts referred to as "Bud S". It had to be a guy.

Unless I am missing something obvious here...

EDIT: Unless they are horribly misspelling the nickname of Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin.

Wait a minute... Obama already has multiple portraits in the White House, and they've all been removed from the wall?

I wonder how long you have to spend in a saloon before your hair is beautified. Probably comes right before "bulletproof."

Is that even allowed? AIUI, there are portraits of all presidents hanging in the White House, and the current president has the right to choose three of them for display in and around the Oval Office, but they all have to be hanging somewhere. For one thing, most of the mediocre 19th century presidents would have been stored in a broom closet somewhere for decades by now.

Yes, all my detective work above comes to naught. The Aldrins supposedly live in California; that's a long way to travel for a hair saloon, it must be good.

So you visit the White House again after 40 years and seven administrations, and you're surprised and shocked--SHOCKED! to different paintings on different walls? I thought it was common knowledge that rooms are occasionally remodeled and furnishings are changed according the tastes and needs of the first family. I imagine there are some limitations, but it's a residence, not a museum. Of course, even museums rotate in different artwork. Sometimes they even show-- [can you imagine?] "black art."

Fair warning: even if I'm still living in the same house 40 years from now, you might see different art on my walls. Just wanted everyone to be prepared for the shock. Wouldn't want anyone to get sick in my house or anything. I'll be 90; at that age, it might be difficult for me to clean up your mess.
