Disposable v. cloth diapers

Comment: Looking into the benefits of reusable diapers, my wife quoted to
me that traditional disposable diapers take 500 years to degrade in a
landfill. She quoted a reusable diaper company's website, and I have also
found the same fact on a number of websites with an eco-friendly bent.
Plastic industry websites claim that diapers degrade in only 10-20 years.
Unfortunately, I haven't found any independent research. What the dirty
truth?
