Default A Week Without God

Seen on my former Army sergeant's FB page....

Quote:
WITHOUT God our week would be: Sinday, Mournday, Tearsday, Wasteday, Thirstday, Fightday, and Shatterday....Seven days without God makes one Weak. (If you are not ashamed of God, post this to your status.)

Funny, I don't worship the Judeo-Christian God, and my week is still Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday....

Ugh. That's so poorly written it makes me cringe. The stupidity of the whole thing doesn't make me feel any better.

It's particularly silly in light of the fact that most of the weekdays are named after pagan gods.

I was just thinking that. I know Woden'sday and Thor'sday. I think some of the others are from various pantheons, but I forget which ones know.

Or, in Swedish:

Måndag (Moon day)
Tisdag (Tyr's day, a minor god in Scandinavian mythology)
Onsdag (Oden's day, leader of the gods and god of wisdom and war in Scandinavian mythology)
Torsdag (Tor's day, the god of war and battle in Scandinavian mythology)
Fredag (Frej's day, the god of fertility in Scandinavian mythology)
Lördag (Lögardagen, washing day)
Söndag (Sun day)

Well, it's hard to deny that there's a lot of gods there, just not the gods the glurge would expect.

On the other hand, Jesus promised to get rid of the evil people, Oden promised to get rid of the ice giants. I certainly see more evil people around than ice giants...

That's funny, in French, most days are named after Roman gods only, with the exception of Saturday (Samedi = day of Sabbat), Sunday (Dimanche, Dies Domenicus, Day of the Lord) and Monday (Lundi, day of the moon):

Tuesday = Mardi (day of Mars, god of war)

Wendesday = Mercredi (day of Mercury, god of, oh well, a lot of stuff)

Thursday = Jeudi (day of Jupiter, god of gods and bearer of thunder)

Friday = Vendredi (day of Venus, goddess of love)

So I see the Germanic or Norse gods used to name days in English have the same functions as their Roman "colleagues".

Anyway, should I rename the days of the week, I'd go with:

Darkday, Bluesday, Midday, Hopeday, Freeday, Shoppingday and Hobbyday.

As I recall, Tuesday through Friday are named after Germanic/Norse gods: Tiw, Wotan, Thor and Freya. Saturday is named after the Roman god Saturn, of course.

ETA: spanked.
