Default Chestnuts repel spiders?

I saw this on a thread on another message board. Someone recommended chestnuts as a pet-safe way to get rid of spiders. The reason is supposed to be that the oil in fresh chestnuts is toxic to them.

Chestnuts will kill spiders, but you have to aim carefully.

Teacher Official: spiders are not afraid of conkers

For years, people have put conkers around their houses, believing their shininess or smell kept spiders away, but now a group of shoolchildren have proved the theory is false.

Conkers, aka horse chestnuts, Aesculus hippocastanum are not the same thing as chestnuts.

Yup... one repels spider veins and the other spiders. Neither of them is particularly efficacious if you ask me
