Jerry Dior's son had to know the answer to the radio trivia question: Who is the player in the Major League Baseball logo?

"I had to tell him, 'No, it's nobody,'" says Dior, the now-retired graphic designer who created the logo 40 years ago to help celebrate baseball's centennial.

Dior's son, Mitchell, made that call nine years ago, but the common answer to the question has for much longer been that the silhouetted batter is Hall of Famer Harmon Killebrew. Even Killebrew believed it.

It's also been commonly rumored that the MLB logo was based on Pete Rose.

I've never been able to figure out why some people are so convinced that there had to by any model for the logo.

I wanna know what eagle modeled for the AL logo. It's obviously not the same bird that modeled for the NL logo. The Senior Circuit had to get some bird to hold still for a drawing with a glove on his right foot and holding a bat in with his left talons. No wonder that NL eagle looks so hastily drawn.
