I thought this was considered common knowledge, and anecdotal evidence seems to back it up. I wonder if it's an old evolutionary adaptation, since hearing and smell (necessary for survival) tend to diminish with age - would larger receptacles for the sensory input help to offset the decrease in sensitivity?
