Comment: I once heard that Billy Gibbons and Dusty Hill from ZZ Top were
offered a million dollars from Gilette to shave off their beards for an ad campaign. They refused the offer. I was wondering if it was true. |

I saw them in concert a few weeks ago, and their beards are kind of gross looking in person. Reminiscent of Cousin Itt, you couldn't see any of their face. It was hat, sunglasses and beard, and that was it. Their beards didn't even move when they sang. Creepy.

It might be creepy but it's their signature look, no one could see them and mistake them for another band. I don't know if a million dollars outweighed the cost of losing a signature look/brand.

Indeed; they probably also have enough royalties that a million dollars isn't a huge deal to them. They've got five platinum albums and five gold ones, and are still touring after 35 years in the business. According to several web sites, the Gilette offer came in 1984, at the height of their popularity. I doubt a million dollars would be enough incentive to lose a signature look.

I'd imagine they aren't exactly in dire need of a million dollars.
Not to mention they may not have to actually ever sing another note.... |
