Cell Phone Store charges two tax rates, not two taxes

QUESTION — I keep receiving warning e-mails about how the cell phone numbers will all be released to telemarketing companies, and we will be charged for the calls.

The e-mails say it will happen this month, and the only way to prevent it is to call the national Do Not Call List at (888) 382-1222.

Do we need to do this? Will our numbers be given to the telemarketing companies?

ANSWER — Nope. Those cell phone warnings have been circulating on the Internet for at least four years. According to, the warning notes came from previous attempts of telephone companies to start a directory of cell phone numbers, and some mistakenly thought it meant they would be releasing it to telemarketers. Your cell phone is already protected.

You can call the Do Not Call number because it's legitimate, but it's not necessary to do it immediately. The cell phone directory will likely be published, but it's on an “opt-in” basis, and your number won't be listed unless you request it.
