My town had exactly one high school, and no AP. They did, however, have a major state university (still do, for that matter). A very high percentage of the graduating classes went on to college. It was possible, as a senior, to take Calculus for college credit rather than high school credit. That option went away when Calculus became a regular high school class.

None of that has anything to do with intelligence scores or mensa or intellectual snobbishness, of course. Just me blathering on.
