I am outraged that low-income people are often held before trial (and separated from their children) because of excessive bail requirements and because the often don't have the assets that a bail bondsman might require. As I'm sure you know, outrage is not a single-source emotion.

Also, the children of inmates are allowed to visit and talk to their parent(s), they are usually placed with relatives or the other parent, and the parent(s) usually have time to talk to their children before the separation and can do their best to prepare them. (One story I read said that the children of some illegal immigrants are taken away under false pretenses like getting a bath so the parents never have a chance to say a long-term goodbye.
