I know comparing the USA's infrastructure to a developing country isn't really an apples to apples comparison, but when I was in India in 2010 there were brief power outages almost every day, and that was just treated as normal by my Indian coworkers. The office had all the important equipment on uninterruptible power supplies to compensate.

I remember visiting one place in Alaska where the power lines were on big, hefty, three-legged steel towers rather than the usual wooden poles, because the area was subject to frequent high winds and the wooden poles would blow over too easily. I wonder if Switzerland does something similar and uses something more rugged than wooden poles for their power lines. I would think burying them in the more mountainous areas would be extremely difficult.
