You might want to read deeper into your own link. They offer differences training on lots of models of aircraft.

Also, the FAA thinks the DC-9 and the MD-80 line of aircraft are the same basic model as they all share one type certificate (pdf). Note that the first few "new models", are called DC-9-81 (MD-81), DC-9-82 (MD-82),DC-9-83 (MD-83), and DC-9-87 (MD-87).
