That used to happen often enough in Cornwall that the tourist board issued specific warnings every summer about not digging tunnels into the dunes, along with the warnings about not climbing the cliffs (which were more widely ignored...).

Usually it was small children who got suffocated (and often died) rather than 35-year-old men though. You'd have thought adults would have more sense. Mind you, I still think of this quite a lot when I see photos on Facebook of children sitting at the bottom of huge holes and tunnels in sand or sometimes snow, and presumably the photos were taken by adults who thought there was nothing wrong with it...
