I suspect tubal ligation rather than a hysterectomy. If I remember correctly there is a lot more problems and complications that are associated with a hysterectomy, making it a non-preferred method of sterilization. On the other hand tubal ligation is the preferred method because it leaves in place and is possible to reverse (not always successfully). There is also a small chance that a fallopian tubes will heal or something happens to let an egg though and possible pregnancy.

Something I remember reading about when I was younger when me best friends mother had to have a hysterectomy for some serious medical reason. Not being a women or doctor, I'm have no personal interest in learning more than what I have and it was many years ago. So feel free to say I'm completely wrong.
