I've heard several variants of this story (some of which might have happened) but I found a good version earlier this year.

It appears in La Rabouilleuse / The Black Sheep by Honoré de Balzac, which was first published in 1842 (and set a few years earlier). Maxence Gilet and his friends disassemble the cart of Old Fario, hoist it up a (steep bank surrounding a) tower and put it back together at the top. Then, when Fario discovers it and demands that they get it back down, Max pushes it over the edge and it falls and shatters.
