Putin's speech

Comment: Putin's speech on Feb.04, 2013

This is one time I would recommend to our elected leaders they pay attention to the advice of Vladimir Putin....how scary is that? Spread the word and pass this on, and on, and on.

On February 4th, 2013, Vladimir Putin, the Russian president, addressed the Duma, (Russian Parliament), and gave a speech about the tensions with minorities in Russia :

"In Russia live Russians. Any minority, from anywhere, if it wants to live in Russia , to work and eat in Russia , should speak Russian, and should respect the Russian laws. If they prefer Sharia Law, then we advise them to go to those places where that's the state law. Russia does not need minorities. Minorities need Russia , and we will not grant them special privileges, or try to change our laws to fit their desires, no matter how loud they yell 'discrimination'. We better learn from the suicides of America , England , Holland and France , if we are to survive as a nation. The Russian customs and traditions are not compatible with the lack of culture or the primitive ways of most minorities. When this honorable legislative body thinks of creating new laws, it should have in mind the national interest first, observing that the minorities are not Russians."

The politicians in the Duma gave Putin a standing ovation for five minutes.

I've got no idea whether Putin said that or not, but I would advise politicians all over the world not to follow that advice.

Russia, like most other countries that grew in the time of imperialism, incorporated areas that where independend nations before, where different ethnic and religious groups lived. Those minorities aren't "coming to Russia" (or Germany, or Turkey, or the India), they always lived there.

And "the lack of culture or the primitive ways of most minorities"? Come on! That's just racist.

The Kremlin website doesn't list any speeches to the Duma on February 4th.

Not many leaders say what they are really thinking.

Putin would never use the words that have been attributed to him in the above post. He could have said something like the following, without the obvious discrimination to show a disagreement with elements of Sharia Law.

"In Russia immigrants from anywhere should respect the Russian laws. If they prefer Sharia Law, then we advise them to go to those places where that's the state law. We will not grant them special privileges, or try to change our laws to fit their desires, no matter how loud they yell 'discrimination'. If we are to survive as a nation we better not repeat the experiences of America, England, Holland and France. The Russian customs and traditions are not compatible with discriminating elements of Sharia Law. When this honorable legislative body thinks of creating new laws, it should have in mind the national interest first, observing the Russian customs and traditions towards all citizens equally."
