'Child of Eden' on the Kinect. Very trippy but easily the best Kinect game for me so far. Your right hand maps targets with awave of the reticule across the screen and fires with a thrust of the hand forward while switching to your left brings up a constantly firing laser. You fly on rails through a pretty trippy computer generated space.

It has made my arms really sore though.

He's also "The Arbiter" in Halo 2 and Halo 3.

Sort of. Gamebryo isn't credited on the splash screen, but the engine is very heavily rewritten Gamebryo as some of the animations have that floaty Gamebryo-ness I'm familiar with. I'm pretty sure they're not using FaceGen for the character faces anymore. FaceGen basically whacked all characters so hard with the ugly stick. It probably didn't help that the lighting effects in Oblivion gave everyone a melty wax museum look either.

In the Skyrim mod scene, there is now a Macho Man Randy Savage dragon replacement mod. I think this fulfills my "What the I don't even" moment of the week.

Any Rift players?

Even though I've been told that the game is a lot more RPG than shooter, the controls are going to take some time to get used to. Not that that's a bad thing, but it's just that my only experience with anything shooting related is Doom and Metroid Prime. I'm sure with time I'll get the hang of things. At least I didn't end up blowing up a door on the Normandy like I did the first time I played through it.

Captain Anderson sounds awfully familiar as well...

It's not possible for you to blow up part of the Normandy (unless you were playing ME2 before, and even then what happens isn't a result of your actions).

I'm not into shooters, and especially not ones that require fast reflexes, and I found Mass Effect to not be too challenging. You could always change the gameplay settings to make it easier at least until you get the hang of the controls. I think I played it through the first time on "casual" and with targeting assist turned on.

Also, as you level up, you'll get guns with higher accuracy and you can spend leveling points on improving your own accuracy. That makes it easier to shoot things. You can also choose whether to control your squad mates' powers or let them use them automatically.

Pipcked up Rage during the Steam holiday sale. Playing it for a while and taking a break for Skyrim.

I have to say, though, I'm thoroughly underwhelmed. The engine is nowhere near as pretty as the screenshots suggested. Most textures are largely pixelated and blurry at short distances, and at any distance they take several seconds to pop in. It's extremely distracting.

Aside from that it seems that the id team still don't know what to do with their engines once they build them. The gameplay is boilerplate FPS with some mediocre driving thrown in. Worst of all, it's obvious that id designed the controls and menus with a console in mind, and certain things (I still haven't figured out the whole quick use "diamond") just were not translated well.

Still, I keep playing because I keep hoping it'll get better.

GenYus234 09 January 2012 02:01 PM

Have you played Borderlands? If so, how does Rage stack up against it?

PS. You should play Skyrim sooner if you want good landscapes. :)

chillas 09 January 2012 02:46 PM

I played Borderlands for about two hours then wished I hadn't spent any money on it. Completely unplayable, IMHO. Rage, at least, has fun shooting mechanics. That's one thing that id still does well.

I got XBox a month ago, and I signed up for Gamefly. I always wanted to try Halo, so I put bunch of games along with halo 1 and 2 in my queue. For some reason GF ignored my queue and sent me Halo and halo 2 together. So, I have both together and I am playing Halo 1 now. I'm at the level where you go into the Covenant ship to free the captain

One thing peeves me is that it doesn't have any maps. It would be so useful to see how far I am from my target. Are there any maps available online?

Right now, all my playtime goes into SWTOR, it is almost getting excessive :-o

Even with the Early Access, my highest character so far is only a level 34 Bounty Hunter Merc. I switched between sides and classes so much, because I wanted to get an impression of the different story lines and then I was sucked into that character for hours again

And then I "had to" start some characters on two german servers, since two of my friends wanted to play together with me, but their english isn't good enough for the UK servers.
When we run around in a group while talking on Mumble and having our mission dialogues, it is so much fun and time flies. Suddenly it is 3 AM and we have been at it for 8 hours straight :-o

I got Skyward Sword for Christmas, and I've been spending a lot of time playing it, which is unusual for me since I usually have a short attention span and don't finish long games. It's a very good Zelda game. They've really integrated the Wii controls much better than Twilight Princess, which was essentially a Gamecube game. They enhance the experience and allow for fun new game mechanics, rather than feeling tacked on.

I'm nearly 40 hours in, have 2 flames and a full set of B button items, with all my equipment fully upgraded, all items purchased from the flying shop, the 5000+ rupee wallet from the demon, and 16 hearts, with some heart++ potions ready for the next boss. I don't know how much more game there is still left, but I definitely get the sense that I'm closer to the end than to the beginning.

I'm now saved at the 3rd silent realm entry point, but I'm going to wait till tomorrow to do it because I find them kind of stressful with the time limits and the threat of having to do them all over. The 2nd one I managed to do on the first try, but the first one took me at least 10 tries. I suspect the third one will be possibly the hardest, judging from the terrain.

One thing I still can't do is the frigging harp minigame at the pumpkin inn. I've tried several times and it's never good enough. I've tried two techniques, one to try to strum at a continuous pace but at the same beat as their swaying. The other is to literally move all the way left when they go left and all the way right when they go right, which is very abrupt and not very musical. Neither works for me.

Tabbyclaw 10 January 2012 08:14 AM

I found a copy of We Love Katamari at the secondhand store, so I've been whiling away many happy hours on that in between Epic Mickey (still haven't finished it once) and Okami (second or third replay). I like it even more than the original, which is one of my favorite timewasters.

Oh yeah. I'm on the cutting edge.

Finished Professor Layton and the Last Specter.
The story wasn't quite as entertaining as I'm used to (well, it's hard to surpass Unwound Future) but still good fun.
I like Emmy, she's a cool character.

Off-topic, but I figured the people that would appreciate it the most here would be in this thread.

Our corporate intranet usually features pictures and stories about the employees on the front page. This is the one from today:

Just be careful when they start testing the Mr. Handys, Securitrons and Protectrons! In fact, better take a day or week off!

Playing 'Space Rangers 2: Rise of the Dominators' which I got for $10 from Steam. Great fun.

I've always been quickly bored by FPS type games. When Doom first came out, after 15 minutes, I'd had quite enough thenk yew. Then I discovered RTS games like War Craft and Star Craft, AOE, etc, and love them. I like the challenge of manageing an economy along with the rest of the stuff.

I've always been a student of WW2 since I was a kid. I've read quite a lot about it, and while It was open, volunteered at the Planes Of Fame museum at the Flying Cloud Airport.

I'd always yenned for a game such as Star Craft but with the environment of WW2.

My son introduced me to Command of Heros about a month ago.:)

Big mistake. I've been spending waaay more time than I should playing it, and have trained myself to "walk away." when I think I'm getting a bit obsessive about it.

But, it's well put together, and based on what I know about WW2 stuff, it's actually pretty accurate in terms of how the weapons behave and such.

Mr. Sender 10 January 2012 08:51 PM

I don't know if I just had bad luck with one mission in Company of Heroes or what, but I ended up slowly turtling in order to win that assault on the hill. A bit jarring after the more realistic nature of the game.

And oh man, did I hate going up against those German tanks. I'm not sure ordering every squad to desperately open fire with PIATs, recoiless rifles, frantic throwing of satchel charges, and wasting mortar barrages is a good sign of a commanding officer... :-o

A silly question about Skyrim - how do you tell what spell effects are active on you?

I'm having a go at being a "proper" mage, wearing mage robes rather than armour and casting an Oakskin spell on myself instead, but I can't see anything to tell me how long the spell has left and when it will wear off. In fact, I can't even see anything telling me that the spell is in effect other than by going to the Items -> Apparel menu, looking at my armour class, and making sure it's 40 more than it was without the spell.

Surely there must be a way to tell? Am I supposed just to count to 60 and recast all the time? What if somebody casts a spell on me? How would I tell?

... And for that matter, where are my stats in general? Do they not exist in Skyrim?
