much of the garbage floating around the internet.
My inbox is usually stuffed with messages from well-meaning friends
exhorting me to "send 10 messages right away" or to immediately stop
bleaching my clothes or some other kind of nonsense.

I'm something of a skeptic myself and it irritates me that people just
mindlessly forward this dreck. I usually come to Snopes and do a quick
scan, then reply. But there's so much crap, and I have so little time to
spare to raise the level of critical thinking skills, that I've just begin
to sigh, knowing I can't do it alone. My Delete key is busy these days.

checked on an e-mail I received (about the "proposed 28th Ammendment") and
checked it out on Snopes before passing it on. Boy, am I glad I did.

In fact, the only time in recent memory I've had to send a Big Apology to
my e-mail list was when I DIDN'T check something out on Snopes before
having an emotional reaction to an e-mail that was going around.

I don't know how you do it, but, again, thank you for being a reliable
source of fact!

appreciate the excellent grammar and punctuation you use -- that makes all
you write come across so beautifully and so clearly... people don't
realize how vital and energizing punctuation can be!

And second, there's how much I appreciate your excellent writing -- you
always inject such a wonderful perspective into your "essays" and fill
them with color and a light that make them ever informative, entertaining,
thought-provoking, and fun.

And third, I just really enjoy "visiting" you now and again... your energy

"Bible" to many people -- there's so much disinformation out there, and
stuff just plain wrong, that frequently I receive an e-mail with the
addendum "checked with snopes.com". You do such a good job, and many
times no one says "thanks", so this is just a small pat on the back for

say this is happening or that and how you should believe it.. I so
recomend that pepole come to this website in get the truth on the subject
or at least look it up frm another soucre. Knowledge is Power.. Most

arrive, even I would have to go thru all sorts of gyrations and worry. The
latest was the Hallmark Greeting disaster scenario. Checked you site and
you said that Windows has it covered, the msg is a mutation of something
old, and that just don't click on enclosed links. Three for three.

Comment: I USED to pass on information from well-meaning friends and
family. Then my son questioned my 'integrity.' At first I was offended.
THEN, it became a motivator to be educated for the 'truth' I always
believed was best. Snopes.com has been one of my educators. Connecting
with Snopes, I find there are very few sensational journalism pieces to
pass on. Now, I pass on the key words and reference to Snopes where the
truth can be accessed; where integrity of the issues is resourced.

There is no promise/threat of "pass it on to 10 of your best friends for a
blessing" that is worth the lies that are rampantly saturating our
uneducated minds. In the end, it makes me question what the real issues
are that are flying under the radar of all the smoke screen rumors from
well-intentioned conservatives, friends, relatives and patriotic
Americans. I really hurt for our nation and want the best. But most of
all, I want the truth...for "the truth will set us free."

Thank you, thank you, thank you for pushing for the truth.
I apologize this letter had not been sent sooner. But know that my
appreciation is sent with integrity;and will continue as long as the truth
is needed in our world...that would be forever?

Comment: I have for years tried to get friends to verify info before
forwarding to the world (after having been corrected myself) but one
particular friend has continued to send erroneous emails. I would check
with your site and send him the link. He just recently sent me the Bud
Gregg email, which I knew had inaccuracies. I checked your site and sent
him the link for factcheck. To make a long story... even longer - thank
you for what you do. I appreciate the fact that you do research and you
list references and, as far as a I have seen, have done so in an unbiased

Comment: Just a note to say this site has been my favorite for years!!
Whenever I receive an email with suggestions of what not to do anymore, or
what to look out for . . . I come here and check it out first. It would be
cool if you came up with a funny, small commercial for tv. Start each one
with a funny urban legend then show the victim quickly checking Snopes
with their mobile phone, only to find out their situation is a hoax, so it
disappears with a puff of smoke. something like that lol!

information is accurate, and not a farce as so many emails that come

Snopes, I check it anyway. Most of the time they are lying. Thank you for

they cannot believe everything that is on the internet, emails, pictures,

I just wanted to say that I appreciate your objectivity in the comments
and reporting you offer for the stories to which you respond. I've visited
your site on a number of occasions, and always appreciate the references
and detailed information you offer to support or dispell a potential urban
legend. Your elaboration on many of the articles illustrates the often
multifaceted nature of the problems from which the legends have sprouted.
Even in the face of an obvious and ridiculous urban legend, you often add
commentary that illuminates the "social feelings" that may have incubated
the legend in the first place. Nevertheless, you report it fairly.

We need more folks like you in the news media: objective, sane, fair and
reasonable.

Comment: I so admire the work you do to provide answers to the question of
authenticity of online stories that crop up daily and I wonder how you can
possibly do this. Do you have a large staff of investigators or do you
just never sleep? How are you compensated for your excetional efforts?

Your write-up about the story of Reggie, the soldier's dog who was put up
for adotion when the soldier was killed in action is an especially
pertinent example of why I admire you and your work. Although you debunked
the story with flawless logic, your treatment of the subject was
absolutely marvelous. You told us how the issue of pets of our military
people deploying overseas can be handled and showed the deepest respect
most (all?) Americans and most non-Americans I have talked with (I live in
Spain) feel for those American military people who must make the sacrifice
the fictitious soldier made in the story.
