I have lost count of how many times good-intentioned folks have sent
hoaxy, horrific, panic-riddled and ultimately ridiculous stuff to me. I
have made it a regular process to run any and everything "odd" through
your site...and then usually will send the Snopes.com link to the
near-panicked person that sent me the goofy stuff. Most often it is
either my poor, computer-challenged Mom or my
"getting-the-hang-of-this-stuff" Dad...although HE has taken to checking
your site himself now :-) Both are 70+ and worry about me and the "11
kids".
So I just wanted to tell you how much I appreciate that you took this task
on - it is a great service to the computer-cruising world.

Comment: I appreciate your report about Reggie (or Tank) the dog. The
story was heartwarming and when I searched for its veracity on your
website and found it to be false I was somewhat disheartened.

But the manner in which you gently stated the facts and thoroughly
investigated even the remotest possibilities of it being true shows your
attention to detail as well as your love for the American soldier. This
was climaxed by your final paragraph reminding the reader of the awesome
debt we owe to those serving our country.

For a website which most people go to for a true or false report, you went
above and beyond the call to honor the intent of the story as well as
those whom the story uplifts.

Comment: Thanks for what you do. The urban myths (lies) are flying
around the internet. Unfortunately, many people don't know enough to fact
check them and accept them at face value.

Of course, people will believe what they want to believe. I guess there
is no way to stop the pollution of cyberspace with deliberate lies, but at
least you give us who like to be reality based some ammo.

friends and relatives that get passed from person to person and most of it
seems far fetched. I hate to get mail that makes false claims and the
sender is asking me to pass it along. I always check your site before I

site is to me! As a librarian, I've used it as a valuable resource for
years. As a friend, I've helped stop an awful lot of ridiculousness being
spread around with the help of this site. As a loving daughter, I've
helped my mom (a breast cancer survivor) reduce a great deal of
unnecessary added stress derived from receiving advice from well-meaning
friends that has served to terrorize her in the past. (No, mom, you will

This is where I go when I get one of those e-mails that is too good
(weird, bad etc) to be true. I just got the e-mail about the hand
sanitizer and the 4 year old Halle and trust me now that I have confirmed
it on your website, that e-mail is going straight to my daughter-in-law.

Comment: I want to thank you for providing this service. I received yet
another Forward, promising Microsoft will send me money if I forward the
message to all friends. I can't believe this sham is still circulating!
Anyway, whenever I receive a Forward such as that, I always check your
site first. Then, I "Reply to All" that the email offer is bogus and they
should check your site before forwarding things like that. Most people
don't see any harm in forwarding all that garbage, but if a person relies
on email for their livelihood, such as a freelance writer or consultant,
it takes up time and space on email.

So, THANK YOU very much! I appreciate having this website to fall back on
and education people. You are providing a wonderful service to those of
us who get sick of spam.

ridiculous email and I try to draw their attention to your site, so that
they at least check before sending me stuff.

If I recieve rubbish I always send them a link to your site. As the
daughter of a journalist, the first signs of myths are nearly always
obvious - lack of source and details.

Comment: I just want to say that your site is the best tool I have found
for stopping unsolicited chain emails from flooding my inbox. Whenever I
get one I just run it through your search engine to see if it is true.
Rarely are they true or completely true. I then send the link to your
article back to the offender. After a couple of what I like like to call
"snopes slaps" the offender usually stops sending me the offending emails.

Comment: I love this website. I get so many "forwarded" e-mails and most
are repetitive. I found Snopes a few years ago and use it frequently to
confirm if an e-mail is true or false. I have also recommended Snopes to
repeat-forwarders. So many people have the belief that if it is on the
net or in an e-mail it MUST BE TRUE. Wrong!

things that just don't seem plausible to me.

Recently I received a newsletter from a National Motivational Keynote
speaker who made reference to one of the "Stella Award Lawsuits". All I
did was search for Terrence Dickson on your website & up came the
information.

I'm so grateful that you do the necessary research and cite resources. I
really wish more people would be realistic and fact check things on
Snopes.com before perputuating the myth/legend/mis-information. My
friends & family are starting to dislike me a call me a "wet blanket" for
referring them to Snopes.com to see the facts. I believe they're truly
disappointed when the urban legends prove to be false. Thanks again for
