Wild (Backyard) Kingdom: post your photos

I thought it'd be nice if we had a thread where Snopesters could share photos of the critters we encounter. I'll start us off with this photo I just snapped in my backyard of a black flower wasp with amazing iridescent wings:

It was probably looking for a beetle larva it could sting and paralyze so it could lay an egg in it. Any critter which helps keep down the garden pests in my yard is more than welcome!

We've had a pair of Ruby-throated hummingbirds in the yard for about two weeks now.

For a suburban back yard really not all that far from the city, our yard has seen a surprising array of wildlife. Squirrels and birds in great number, an opossum, a groundhog, two turtles, a raccoon, a chipmunk, a skunk, even some deer!

This pic is a few years old but I like it. :)

I love photography & I love animals, so I could share a ton! I'll start off with just the backyard though!

A little garter snake I rescued from our window well:

Mr. Grasshopper:

Some flies:

And an itsy bitsy spider:

I could go on & on, but I'll stop there! For now, anyway!

OH yeah, and here's a picture of a wasp doing what wasps do best--building a nest in unfortunate places such as the mailbox:https://plus.google.com/photos/10335...40908712928462

I put a stop to that.

Gutter Monkey 08 February 2015 03:11 AM

I'm totally not making this up but when I clicked on boogers' "Painted Lady" photo Google+ asked me if I wanted to tag my face in the photo

I've got plenty of paint if you need assistance.

You all have such neat photos. I got a squirrel. In a box.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ndhazel020.jpg

Dasla 08 February 2015 12:21 PM

When I first scrolled down Horse Chestnuts post I thought "The doesn't look like a squirrel in a box, that looks like a black cat on a fence...oh!"

What is puss thinking about that squirrel do you think.

Black cat : "Au Gratin or Au Jus?"

Horse Chestnut 08 February 2015 04:14 PM

No squirrels were harmed in the making of this photo. :)

I only have a balcony at the moment so I mostly get creepy crawlies. We did have a rat infestation a couple of years ago - I have a photo of a rat in the bin, but I can't find it! Possibly I only copied it to my work computer.

I have a video of this spider making a web, but photobucket won't upload it properly:

And a lovely snail:

I saw this fox around a few times last summer or autumn. Here he is waiting to cross the road:

Although not quite as handsome as the female fox that lived in my parents' garden a few years ago:

Also from my parents' garden, one night the lawn was covered with mating slugs. This is one of the less gross photos I took:

Slightly more gross ones here and here...

It's been a dreary, rainy weekend here, and any wildlife that might otherwise be in my yard is off seeking shelter, but here are some photos I've taken in the past:

A tree frog that climbed up my glass door a few years ago (with reflection of my hand and kitchen floor):

A scrub jay chick that was in the grass in my front yard instead of its nest for some reason:

Little Pink Pill 08 February 2015 09:46 PM

Is the scrub jay there right now, or was this last year?

WildaBeast 08 February 2015 09:55 PM

Last year.

Little Pink Pill 08 February 2015 10:27 PM

It would be early if it was this year, but baby bird season is coming soon.

We're you able to put him back in his nest? He's too little to be down.

WildaBeast 08 February 2015 10:50 PM

I didn't really do anything with it, because I wasn't sure what, if anything, I should do.

Little Pink Pill 08 February 2015 10:57 PM

You're right not to interfere when you're not sure. But in general if they can't hop around and hide, and they don't have tail feathers or you can see the feather sheaths on the wings, they need to go back in the nest.
