Standard Oil ran out of gas in the Rose Parade

Comment: I've read in many places (although most seem to be similar as
illustration sources) that the Standard Oil Company once had a float in
the Rose Parade that ran out of gas, bringing the entire parade to a halt.
The irony, of course, was in the fact that it was Standard Oil that ran
out of gas. I'm wondering if this illustration is true? And if so, in what
year it occurred? Thanks!

Story seems to appear first told by J Vernon McGee in a glurgical account that ends "As I saw that float, I saw a picture of many Christians today..." The point being that they're supposed to be the ones with the petrol (which he likens to "power") but they have run out. He claims it was a parade "right before World War II" but I couldn't find any other account of this happening - nor of any other telling prior to 1983.
