Commercials you actually like
We used to have a thread by this title, but I couldn't find it.
Farmers' Insurance has a series of ads featuring J.K. Simmons. That alone is reason enough for me to love them. :D |
The recent Geiko commercials have been pretty good. I particularly like this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XfmVBmDKLZI
Old Spice - "I'm on a horse!" The Sony Playstation ads with Kevin Butler. |
The new E-trade commercial cracks me up...' Nooooobody knows the trouble I've seen..'
I don't watch a lot of TV outside of Nick Jr., and they don't show commercials. They do have a little running gag about how great life would be if everything were more like preschool. Some are stupid, but there are a couple that I think are really cute.
One has a group of mechanics with a bunny as their "class" pet. The bunny is super cute, and they way they interact with the bunny is so spot on to how little kids would. "Let's see if he likes apples!" The other one has a politician giving a press conference, but it's like show and tell. He's showing the press his "hot lips phone" and one of the press members asks him where he got it and he says, "Off the record? I got it from my mom." It's just so endearing. |
The Geico TV ads are funny. I think the one with the pig going whee whee whee all the way home is the funniest of the lot.
I love the pig one. The best part is that his "whee" is so high-pitched, but his speaking voice isn't -- he sounds like a normal kid. The way the mom and the other kid play their parts is great, too.
I like the "Bird in the Hand" one, too. It's not particularly funny, but it looks and sound so much like the average Antiques Roadshow interaction. It's really spot on!
I love those Geico commercials, such as Bird in the Hand and the therapist one.
The recent Time-Warner Cable commercial has gotten my attention of how you sell a product, especially to parents. This would be the one where two vacationing parents checking their phone messages online, and they get one from their neighbor saying he wished he knew about the party, since he couldn't get out of the driveway. The dad immediately phones home and says to their son that they're cutting their vacation short because of lousy weather...and then sit back and enjoy their vacation.
I like the Pine-Sol commercial with the man who knows that in order to get his girlfriend back he needs to do the floors with Pine-Sol.
I personally love AT&T's spots that show folks rollerskating around the office, driving to work in bumper cars, and riding in roller coaster-style elevators.
I love the AT and T ads with "Every Day" playing in the background also.
"Mad Men" runs commercials that parallel the show, with ad men and women talking about their ideas for campaigns. Sometimes I'd like to leave the adventures of Don Draper for awhile and delve into the lives of the folks in the ads instead! |
I have rarely laughed so hard as I have laughed at the Geico pig.

I crack up every time that commercial comes on, Avril. My toddlers love it too!
The entire concept is genius, but whoever thought of giving the pig pinwheels deserves a raise.
In that same series of ads, I also like the "Woodchucks" commercial:

Quit chuckin' my wood! With this series, I'd have to say that Geico has redeemed itself for the Caveman series. |
I'm always excited to see what they'll do next, too.
My favorite is still, "Was Abe Lincoln too honest?"
Mrs. Lincoln: Do I look fat? (Abe hems and haws and either says, "little bit," or gestures a small amount.) |
I believe that Abe says “perhaps a little...” and he gestures as he gets the evil eye.
The scratchy sepia video quality makes it all the more realistic and funny. My favorite of those series remains the “does a former drill sergeant make a terrible therapist” and shows R. Lee Ermey calling his patient a jackwagon. I laugh it. |
