Ex Sheriff Joe Arpaio running for Senate

"Trump needs me"

Well the rest of us don't!

Lainie 09 January 2018 08:19 PM

Suggesting Trump "needs" you sounds like a great way to get to Trump to turn on you. I doubt he'd care for the suggestion that he "needs" anyone.

crocoduck_hunter 09 January 2018 09:12 PM

One can only hope that'll be the case, Laine.

If he wins the election, I vote we push the entire state aside from the reservations into the Grand Canyon and cover it in cement.

E. Q. Taft 09 January 2018 10:44 PM

Can we please find out he's a pedophile now and not have to endure the campaign?

thorny locust 09 January 2018 11:28 PM

Dear Arizona,

Please imitate Alabama.

-- they might, too. Note this bit from the article:

He also cited supporters who urged him to seek public office again after a crushing 2016 re-election defeat following six terms as sheriff of metro Phoenix.
They don't seem to like him as much as they used to. Or else different people are -- shockingly! -- showing up to vote.

I resent that.

crocoduck_hunter 10 January 2018 01:17 AM

Fine, you can move to New Mexico first. :p

thorny locust 10 January 2018 01:25 AM

Maybe kitap likes Arizona.

And if everybody decent moves out, who will defend the place from Arpaio?

-- thorny - not going anywhere, except maybe to picket my representative's office -- locust

I'd rather not. That country has some truly gorgeous scenery with the Grand Canyon being the piece de resistance of it. Can we just Spartan Kick Sheriff Joe into the Grand Canyon and be done with it?

Another Fact to Consider When it Comes to America's Shittiest Sheriff: the jail where he fed prisoners' rotten meat and had them camp out in tents in 100 degree plus temperatures, was predominately used for people awaiting trial. So he wasn't just treating prisoners like shit; he was treating people who hadn't even been convicted of anything like shit.

Granted all the abuses would still be NBSKing wrong even if every single prisoner was a veritable serial killer Voltron named Ted Gacy Bundy McVeigh-Kemper, but I felt said fact needed to be pointed out, lest we forget.

What and defy a national landmark like the Canyon? Plus littering is already a bad idea.

Mouse 10 January 2018 02:42 AM

I don't know. The elements would probably take care of what's left of him pretty quickly and it may be the only positive contribution Sheriff Joe makes to the world, his body serving to incubate and feed many varieties of insect life. :p

It would be more productive to concentrate on the wonderful things the state has to offer.
Arizona Fact 1: A single saguaro releases up to 40 million seeds in its lifetime, any one of which may grow into a cactus more capable of effectively representing the state of Arizona in the US Senate. (They're always making speeches. Take a rest saguaros!)
Arizona Fact 2: Although the javelina looks like a pig, it is actually a hoofed mammal of the family Tayassuidae and, contrary to popular belief, is far more loyal to the constitution of the US.
Arizona Fact 3: When people think of the desert, or Arizona for that matter, they usually think of a barren wasteland but this state is home to thousands of species that thrive only in this part of the world and none of which have any inclination to vote for a crackpot who thinks the law doesn't apply to himself.

crocoduck_hunter 10 January 2018 05:01 AM

Arizona fact 4: Arizona is the northernmost range of the jaguar, a large cat that represents far less of a threat to human life than a crazed racist sheriff.

Spanked by Diddy! Besides I'm sure there are laws against defacing a national park.
I've been to the American Southwest; very striking scenery!

Lainie 10 January 2018 01:47 PM

Barbara Kingsolver wrote a very funny piece about her battles with javelinas bent on consuming/destroying her garden. It's called "Making Peace" - I read it in High Tide in Tucson.

GenYus234 10 January 2018 02:16 PM

Arizona fact 5: Arizona has one of the best preserved and most easily accessed meteor impact craters in the world. Many citizens are able to differentiate it from their posterior and thus won't vote for Arpaio.

Ssshhhhhh. Don't say that, or the primary voters may realize that he's unelectable in the general election and not vote for him. Vote Joe (in the primary)!

I've been very shy of that technique since the last presidential election.

Lainie 10 January 2018 03:47 PM

Agreed. I prioritize **not** electing Arpaio over risking him to increase the chances of a Democratic general election victory.

Darth Credence 10 January 2018 04:05 PM

I had made the same comment here about Moore when that primary happened, but realized fairly quickly that it was a pretty dangerous game. It worked out all right, but I agree with others that it is not a good idea to assume someone who wins a major party nomination is unelectable.
But I doubt he wins the primary.
