First world problems

I like to do my taxes pretty much as soon as I have all the paperwork I need. So this time of year when the mail comes I'm always checking for my W-2 and 1099 forms, and it's slightly disappointing when they're not there.

kitap 25 January 2017 07:50 AM

My checks get issued from ADP and I can go onto their site and print off my W-2; does your paycheck company do something similar?

Wolf333 25 January 2017 11:54 PM

I'm taking Governance of IT. While I do commend the instructor for choosing a textbook that is freely available to us through OhioLINK, I feel that 3 chapters on the reasoning behind Sarbanes-Oxley is a bit much.

Cervus 26 January 2017 12:08 AM

The season premiere of Better Call Saul doesn't start until April 10th. It used to begin in February.

The thing that complicates things a bit this year is the fact that I no longer work for the company I'll be getting the W-2 from. If I worked there I could access it on their internal web site, but I don't know of a way to do that from outside the company. But that's moot right now anyway; I looked for one of the 1099s I'll need online and just got a message saying to check back after Jan. 28.

Coke is ending their My Coke Rewards promotion where you enter codes from Coke products and get points that you can redeem for prizes. I usually enter the code whenever I happen to buy a Coke product and exchange the points for a coupon for a free 12 pack when I have enough. I probably won't have enough points for that or really anything worthwhile before the program ends, so the points I have will most likely go to waste. I mean they do have sweepstakes for a small number of points per entry, but it's not likely I'll actually get anything from that.

 Ack! I'm deep into that; when's it gonna end? June 30? And no code point entry after March 22? OK, I think I can make that work. Glad you said something.

I just realized I mistakenly bought caffeine free soda last week. No wonder I felt like I was going through caffeine withdrawal yesterday.

What season is it up to now? I've got the first two on DVD - is the one you're waiting to see the third, or fourth?

My first world problem is extreme laziness. Even though I know perfectly well how to use Google, I've learned that if I simply type my question in natural language into a message board, somebody will come along and answer it for me. I can check back at my convenience, and there it is!

WildaBeast 31 January 2017 09:56 PM

I have a bigger first world problem now. I had the struts replaced on my car last week. Ever since then the right rear wheel made an annoying squeaking sound going over even the slightest bump. So I went back to the shop and they told me that strut was defective. It's under warranty, but that means I have to go through the inconvenience of taking it back there yet again.

I went though 3 alternators in 6 months. The first was the original , the second died after 4 months and the third after 5 weeks.

I was so glad I had the paperwork for the warranties of the latter two otherwise it would have cost a lot of pennies..

I wanted to do a SKYPE chat with my writing group, but the person at the other end couldn't work things out.

So much for my New Year's Resolution of staying top of clutter! :(

Ever have a bruise so acute that it sort of itches, and is sore even when it's left alone?

I have one now on my left upper arm. The bathroom in our house is very narrow, and just inside the door to the right is a cabinet suspended up on the wall kind of like a kitchen cabinet. Accident-prone as I am, I'm often bumping into the darned thing when leaving the bathroom and the other day was no exception. I hammered my arm into that sharp corner at the bottom of the cabinet, and felt it for a good long time.

Now I have one of those sore and itchy bruises that looks like a greyish-purple strawberry about halfway between my shoulder and elbow.

Ow... :(

Seaboe Muffinchucker 02 February 2017 03:02 PM

I had a bruise once that took more than two years to fully heal. I know what you mean, TGG.

I bought what I thought was pre-cooked seasoned chicken strips that I was going to make into tacos, but when I opened the package I discovered that it was actually pre-cooked whole chicken breasts. So I ate them without making tacos.

I used to do that, and got some really neat stuff (we love our red toaster and Coke ice cream scoop), but I geve up on it when they changed the program a few years back. I know a lot of people were upset with the changes. Sorry to see it end.

I finally have a job I want to apply to and my job search advisor called in sick.

Having to cut them into strips would have been a FWP as well. :fish:

My last three days of freedom (well, two and a half now) before I start my new job on Monday and it's supposed to rain.

Mouse 10 February 2017 12:18 AM

Snopes is changing the format for their website which offends me both as a crotchety NFBSK opposed to change, but also because I had to use Google like some kind of peasant to find the messageboard. :fish:

TallGeekyGirl 10 February 2017 12:24 AM

Why not just bookmark message.snopes.com and go straight to it?

Mouse 10 February 2017 12:29 AM

I dunno. Sometimes I feel like I should keep track of the ULs circulating, but maybe I need to give that up. It's abundantly obvious that people think skepticism means "I must question everything and never use my own brain to sort out and weigh facts and evidence." That and clearly, critical thinking is a skill that the schools could spend more time on, rather than the scantrons. Judging by the page, most people read the headline of something, close their eyes, then make the conscientious decision as to whether or not to believe. Once the decision has been made, what few critical facilities they had, cease to operate.

That and TGG, you did read that part about me being all crotchety and opposed to change? :p

Don Enrico 10 February 2017 06:39 AM

You can always do what I do - after reading the mesage board, I click on the snopes.com link down left that takes me to the main site.

(And I'm the first one up, so it's not like someone else got up and lowered it to 63, besides the fact that when I saw it it was set to 68 and should have gone on somewhere in that time). I know 63 is comfortable room temperature to a lot of people (and for some reason feels different in different houses- in my boyfriend's townhome they keep their house at 62-64 and I'm usually fine there, so I don't know what to make of any of that) but it's just too cold for me in the morning when I need to get up and not be under blankets anymore...

This morning it happened again and was down to 56 :( Last time it happened, dad didn't seem to care or think it was worth looking into. I guess it's just a programming glitch, but I'm so cold, and I don't imagine it's very good for me to sleep with the temperature that low while my humidifier is on. Or, even if it isn't harmful to my health, it's very uncomfortable and unpleasant.

The heat's been going since I got up and fiddled with the thermostat to just get it going. Hopefully in the next 10-15 minutes it will be warm enough to get dressed without cringing.

UEL 10 February 2017 04:27 PM

Snow. Got 35 cm last night.

Opened up my back door to let my dog out, and it the snow was level with my back door (I have a 5 step set of stairs to the ground). The dog thought "great!" and ran out as if the snow was solid. He disappeared into the white. He ended up bouncing like Tigger all over.

But when I looked out front, the snow had blown differently and there was only about 15 cm in front of my vehicle. Not too bad. I can burst through that pretty easily. Got to the back, and because my neighbours have a service blow their driveway (into a big mound on their yard), the wind patterns for drifting snow, and the dusting from the snow blower, created a 1.1 metre high drift behind my vehicle.

Getting out was not nearly as simple as I had hoped.

We were having a similar issue and were informed that the circuit board in the furnace unit was going bad. Not an inexpensive repair either. Thermostat sends the signal to the furnace, but the furnace 'hiccups' and fails to start. Had to turn the furnace off and then back on to get it to work again.

I turned on Animal Planet expecting to see Treehouse Masters, and they're showing Tanked.

crocoduck_hunter 10 February 2017 10:57 PM

Animal Planet should change their name, given that its been years since most of their programming was actually about animals.

TallGeekyGirl 13 February 2017 01:04 AM

At Sam's Club today in a moment of weakness I got some Reese's Fast Break candy bars.

Looking at the packaging I thought I was getting a king sized box of candy bars, but what I got was a box of King sized candy bars. I didn't realize this until I opened the box, so I can't return them.

They're too big, too sweet, too much. I really prefer the smaller ones. :(

These things are like chocolate peanut butter telephone poles!

Mouse 13 February 2017 02:06 AM

I can't figure out how to organize the links in my bookmarks in alphabetical order. It used to be I could just click and drag them to their intended position, but that hasn't been working. To an anal-retentive weirdo such as myself, it is mildly vexing. :p

UEL 13 February 2017 02:09 AM

I know with one of my browsers there is an option to "Organise Bookmarks" and a separate GUI pops up. Perhaps that is the case where an update has taken the easy click and drag functionality away from you.

ganzfeld 13 February 2017 02:34 AM

FWP Elevators that change their minds. "You said you were going down!"

Seaboe Muffinchucker 13 February 2017 03:23 PM

What browser are you using, Mouse? In Firefox, to alphabetize you go into Show All Bookmarks -> Views -> Sort. In IE 11, you go to the folder you want to organize, then right click and choose Sort by Name.

I don't use Chrome enough to tell you how to do it there.

Seaboe

Morning 13 February 2017 03:34 PM

In Chrome, right click on your bookmarks folder, choose "Bookmark Manager". In the page that opens there is the option to "Organize". You can choose "Reorder by Title".

Sue 14 February 2017 09:46 PM

I totally get coming to places like previously tv to vent about shows you don't like. Really I get it. But when you watch every new episode of the show you don't like and then come on the board to vent about it and wonder why it hasn't been cancelled yet you start to remind me of those Trump supporters who buy expensive drinks at Starbucks so they can put Trumps name on their cup or those other genius's who buy the football jersey of a player they don't like just so they can burn it. You protest by giving money to your "enemy". In other words if you really think a show should be cancelled, here's a clue, stop watching it! All you're doing is adding to the total # of viewers which most of the time means the show will not be cancelled because people like you are adding to their revenue stream!

Lainie 14 February 2017 11:24 PM

People forget, or never realize, that the TV audience is a product being sold to advertisers.

Unless you're a registered Nielsen household, no one is tracking what you watch on television, and it makes no difference at all whether you have your TV on or off.

I don't know how ratings revenue works in regards to streaming.

Sue 15 February 2017 02:37 PM

That's a fair point, Cervus, but the bottom line is if you honestly hate a TV show and are actively and vociferously wondering why it has not been canceled continuing to watch it every week seems counter intuitive to say the least! You personally may not be a Neilson family but you are continuing to support a program by seeing those high priced ads (and in Big Bang Theory as one example of a highly rated show that a lot of people snark on endlessly those ads are taking up a good chunk of the program time). Granted not tuning in may not get a show canceled but tuning in week after week isn't either!
