How did she go from being sentenced to death to parole hearings? Did California not have 'life with no parole' when death sentences were commuted?

Bingo - I think "Twenty to life" was the longest non-death sentence they had.

California instituted LWOP in 1977. I believe the Manson family was resentenced about 1972. ETA: Charlie himself comes up for parole regularly; there doesn't seem to be much chance he'll ever get out, though.

Leslie Van Houten's original death sentence (and subsequent commutation) was negated when she was granted a retrial in 1977, after which she was sentenced to life with the possibility of parole.
