The secret on the ocean floor: was the ocean mining boom sparked by a 1970s CIA plot?

(I adapted the headline slightly to fit in the space).

The secret on the ocean floor

A really interesting article from the BBC about the link between current undersea manganese mining, and a CIA mission from the 1970s. It's two stories in one, really. The second part is about undersea mining on thermal vents, and is all a bit depressing (although possibly less depressing than mining on land).

The article is from a few days ago but I only posted it after Steve reminded me by posting something else from the BBC that I'd read and forgotten!

Oh - I had read something about this sometime in the last year or so. It had surprised me, because I remember the articles in various magazines about mining the manganese nodules littering the ocean floor back in the 70's and early 80's, especially some of the more vivid illustrations of potential mining equipment (Popular Science, I'm looking at you!). Can't remember offhand where I'd read about this, or exactly when, though. Not terribly long ago.

I like the article's rather interesting graphical display; well done.

Let's see what new and interesting ecological disasters this leads to.

IMO, seems an exaggeration to suggest that spy operation "sparked the boom". Millions had already been invested before that and that investment nearly dried up only a few years after the sub fishing operation until the technology was nearly ready and the prices were nearly high enough to pay for actual mining. Then, two decades later, it finally started paying profits... I just don't buy it that the whole sub fishing thing (which, after all, was a successful ruse for only a few years) had a very notable influence.
