I'm getting the same thing on some other sites, and I think it has something to do with the ads.

Pinecone 17 October 2013 09:19 AM

Oh good, it's not just me! for a while it was happening on my parents' PC too, although not on mine.

Mosherette 17 October 2013 10:08 AM

Happens to me too.

Mad Jay 17 October 2013 10:32 AM

Ahh wide ads messing up the page eh? I can believe that

erwins 17 October 2013 11:02 AM

It's happening to me too--on an android tablet using the latest version of the chrome app. It just happened on the search results page, but went away after I clicked on a thread and then came back. There were no wide ads on the page, but there was a floating kind of pop-up window there (not wide) that was gone the second time.

Same here when I try to access this forum on an iPad or Kindle. But once I look into a thread and then return to threadlist it is gone.

I've had a problem with both my tablet and phone showing the text as different sizes on the same page. I think some of the new ads might be doing it, but I can't tell. I installed a new blocker at home, but portables, we'll see.

Gibbie 15 November 2013 10:15 PM

I haven't had problems with wide pages but I do frequently have a video ad that will sit in the lower right hand corner and autoplay.

hambubba 15 November 2013 10:22 PM

I installed adblock under firefox and I haven't seen that one repeating.

erwins 15 November 2013 10:33 PM

Since snopes depends on ad revenues, it's better to fix the problem with how the ads display than to advocate blocking the ads. I have ad blocking installed too, but this site is white listed because I want to support it.

Oddly it doesn't seem to be wide ads. There is one that is fairly small ( can't remember what it's for) that causes a somewhat wide screen, but when I close the it results in a really, really wide screen.

For me at least, this was previously only affecting the boards, but it has now started on the main site as we'll.

Way too late to edit, but the add that seems to mess up my stuff the most is from Audible.

This is happening again. I never resolved it last time through any action I took; it just stopped happening. I hope it will stop again, because it's very annoying. The quoted posts describe exactly what happens on my tablet. There are suddenly far more floating ads that I have to close, as well. Some of them, when I close them, make the screen go extremely wide, which makes the font really teeny tiny. I have to navigate away to make it resolve. Then on the next click, there might be another floating ad, and it may or may not happen again.

erwins 17 June 2014 08:22 PM

More info: It seems to happen when the floating ad is small. There are wider ads, including ones that have grey bars to take up the space to make them full screen width, and those don't cause the problem. The ones that have caused it are small, nearly square Babies R Us ad, and something with Smokey Bear on it.

Latiam 17 June 2014 11:19 PM

Yeah, I'm getting them on iPod and iPad. If it's a case of one or the other, I would prefer the floating ones because they are easier to close and when you close the ones at the bottom of the screen a new one loads so there's no point in closing it.

Mad Jay 24 June 2014 01:11 PM

And now, on the IPad, the page keeps asking me for my location. Is it an ad that is trying to check my location?

erwins 24 June 2014 01:54 PM

Snopes has said before that the location request doesn't come from the board.

Sue 24 June 2014 04:39 PM

Right now, and only when I am on snopes, my system keeps blocking attacks from something called updoor. Not sure if that's just a coincidence or if they are targeting people using this message board. Whatever the reason it's damn annoying!

Gibbie 04 July 2014 04:00 AM

Not sure if this should go here or new topic. Just moments ago an new popover ad started. Jumps up from the bottom of the page, floats along the bottom, covering the bottom of the page, x in the corner of the ad. Right now it's pushing me Priceline ads. The URL seems to be cas.ny.us.critero.com. It comes up on every.single.page.
