New Orleans Mother's Day parade shooting injures 12

Gunmen opened fire as dozens of people marched in a Mother's Day second-line parade in New Orleans on Sunday, wounding at least 12 people, police said.

Police Superintendent Ronal Serpas told reporters that a 10-year-old girl grazed by a bullet was among those wounded in the shooting. She was in good condition. He said three or four people were in surgery but their conditions weren't known. No deaths were reported.

So has it now become too soon to have a meaningful debate about gun control again?

Well, if they hadn't decided that moms needed to be celebrated there wouldn't have been a parade so there would have been no shootings. So it's all the fault of women who have sex and there's zero reason to talk gun control.

Only if those good people in the parade had a gun...

Having a gun in a parade is illegal.

Could you confirm the extent of that prohibition - does that apply only to the people within the parade (on floats, marchers, in bands, etc.) or does it apply to all who attend parades as viewers ('viewers' sounds so passive to describe the audiences at NOLA-area parades)? And is it only within the jurisdiction of the City of NOLA, or is that a statewide law, or maybe imposed on the whole NOLA metro?

hambubba 13 May 2013 03:24 PM

Apparently it's illegal if you are doing something illegal.

Quote:

95.2.1. Illegal carrying of a firearm at a parade with any firearm used in the commission of a crime of violence
It is kinda vague.

Quote:

A. Reckless discharge of a firearm at a parade or demonstration is the reckless or criminally negligent discharge of a firearm within one thousand feet of any parade, demonstration, or gathering for which a permit is issued by a governmental entity.

city law backs that up.

I was referring to a news article, and it appears I was partially wrong.

A second suspect has been arrested in the shooting that injured 20 people at a parade on Mother's Day, police said Thursday afternoon.

Shawn Scott, 24, was arrested Thursday, police Chief Ronal Serpas said. He is the brother of 19-year-old Akein Scott, who was arrested Wednesday night in the shooting.

Serpas said investigators believe the Scotts worked together in the shooting.

Police suspect the brothers were involved in a neighborhood gang and "engaged in a criminal lifestyle by choice," Serpas said.

I don't get that argument. Do the pro-gun folks need time to mourn the bullets used in the shooting?

GenYus234 16 May 2013 09:30 PM

The anti-gun control crowd would like you to believe that they don't want the pro-gun control people using the raw emotions over the deaths to push their agenda on an otherwise unaccepting public.

In reality, they want to delay the dicussion until it is no longer on the top of people's minds.
