Do The 10 Planks of Communism really exist?

I've tried Googling it, but all I come up with are a bunch of conservative or right-wing site. Gah, how bad are some of those sites when I, of all people, question their accuracy??;)

Anyway, are these 10 Planks really planks or pish-posh?

The Communist Manifesto is available for free from Project Gutenberg. In it, there are 10 measures to put capital in the hands of the state:

Quote:

1. Abolition of property in land and application of all rents of land to public purposes.
2. A heavy progressive or graduated income tax.
3. Abolition of all right of inheritance.
4. Confiscation of the property of all emigrants and rebels.
5. Centralisation of credit in the hands of the State, by means of a national bank with State capital and an exclusive monopoly.
6. Centralisation of the means of communication and transport in the hands of the State.
7. Extension of factories and instruments of production owned by the State; the bringing into cultivation of waste-lands, and the improvement of the soil generally in accordance with a common plan.
8. Equal liability of all to labour. Establishment of industrial armies, especially for agriculture.
9. Combination of agriculture with manufacturing industries; gradual abolition of the distinction between town and country, by a more equable distribution of the population over the country.
10. Free education for all children in public schools. Abolition of children's factory labour in its present form. Combination of education with industrial production, &c., &c.
So yes. As to how well the US is following them, that proof is left as an exercise to the reader.

Thank you for setting the record straight! I had the impression that these 10 planks were written separately from the Commie Manifesto. :duh:

And we have seen how well they worked out in practice in Mao's China, North Korea, the late unlamented USSR, etc.

#10 seems okay to me.

You could theoretically build a functioning society out of all ten, it just requires for humans to stop acting human in order to avoid turning into a grossly exploitative dictatorship.

One out of ten is not good odds.

The same thing could be said about Libertarianism. Both work great on paper and in theory, but not so much in practice because neither one takes into account that most people are greedy, lazy, selfish, stupid S.O.B.'s.

No. But unthinkingly dismissing every aspect of all ten simply because they're associated with communism would be foolish.

ETA: I don't think free public education led to the excesses of the Cultural Revolution or Stalinism.

Yup. The only way to build anything approaching a fair society is to make sure that there are plenty of ways for the people to check the authority of those in power.

Which would be much easier if we could stop concentrating so much power and money in the hands of so few...
