Food-on-floor "five second rule" debunked
The “five-second rule” many of us use to feel better ourselves after eating food that fell on the floor has been debunked, reports CBS New York.

Note to CBS News: It's been debunked for a while now. Moreover, Jillian Clark, the High School student who decided to test this belief out in 2003, "earned" an Ig Noble award for her efforts.

Also, I question the need to debunk it, since the vast majority of people who "cite" it don't actually believe it. It's just a joking acknowledgement that, yeah, we're still going to eat that thing dropped.

I have a parrot. He doesn't wait for it to hit the floor. He'd steal it off my plate if I'd let him.

I had this conversation with a colleague a few days ago, and told her that the five-second rule was obvious nonsense. She still wouldn't believe me that it would have been perfectly safe to make tea with the teabag I'd dropped no matter how long it had been on the floor...
